Health - Good and Bad Cholesterol

Good and bad cholesterol

For at least the last ten years there has been a public outcry that cholesterol is bad for you. However new studies and information proves that cholesterol in certain forms can actually be beneficial and necessary to a person.

There are two types of cholesterol HDL and LDL. HDL stands for High Density Lipoproteins, LDL stands for Low Density Lipoprotein. Most doctors recommend that we try to maintain low levels of LDL. Many doctors and nutritionist have advised the public to stay away from fats, saturated fats and oils. LDL is also high in certain types of meat such as red meat which has received flack from nutritional experts in the past.

However many people are now talking about HDL and how HDL is actually good for you. HDL actually helps clear away LDL from your arteries that transport blood and other materials to the heart and throughout the body. HDL is many foods such as fish, nuts and certain oils. HDL is also produced in our livers. Many doctors and nutritionists are now publicizing that HDL is necessary and effective to treat certain types of heart conditions.

If you would like to know more about how HDL can help your health, contact a physician or dietician.
