We're all looking for ways to save money on our auto insurance.
But most people don't know that preventing vehicle theft is a
big step in the right direction--and can put those cheap auto
insurance rates within reach.
A recent study revealed that one in 10 Americans have been
victimized by vehicle theft. High theft rates mean greater risk
for auto insurance companies, who then make up the difference by
charging steeper auto insurance premiums.
But by taking a few simple precautions to cut your vehicle's
risk of thievery, you can reduce your auto insurance
premiums--and avoid becoming another statistic.
Preventing Theft
These preventative measures will help protect your car and
discourage burglars:
Install alarms and other security devices that activate
automatically; or activate anti-theft devices upon exiting your
car.
Drive in the inside lane when on the freeway to avoid
becoming a victim of "bump and run," a popular auto insurance
scam.
Keep all personal items inside your car out of sight to
discourage theft.
When leaving your car in a parking lot,
park as close to the
entrance as possible to make it less of a target.
Lock your doors, raise your windows, and take your keys
with you.
Use a wheel locking device or ignition disabler to
immobilize your car.
Set your emergency brake, and turn your wheels sharply
toward the curb or parking block to discourage towing.
Keep your car in your garage when at home, and lock both
the car
and the garage.
Don't reward thieves by making your vehicle a target. Take
action and make positive changes to ensure your vehicle remains
secure.
Then inform your insurance agent, and ask for auto insurance
discounts. You might be surprised what a difference a few simple
changes can make when it comes to getting
cheap auto insurance!
