As per the comment from gerrard.com, July has given us the hoped for month of consolidation. Markets have been bombarded with data, both economic and corporate, and have remained steadfastly unmoved. This is thoroughly healthy and demonstrates that few have become carried away by the gains of the second quarter. Equity markets appear to be efficiently valued, taking account of the prospect of a US led recovery in 2004 and the risk of ongoing economic torpor. The FTSE 100s trading range has narrowed even further into a band between 4000 and 4200. Optimism over next years prospects is attracting buyers in at the bottom end of this, while nerves over the lack of hard evidence for the recovery means that there is, as yet, insufficient appetite to chase share prices higher. The likelihood is that the break, when it comes, will be upwards but it is important to remember that it is still a close call.
